I received a gorgeous package in the mail a few days ago, and in it was the Liberte by Extase. Seriously. Impressive. Packaging. The entire box was sealed in plastic, ensuring no one has touched your toy. The top cover is white and sports a picture of the toy and some product features. This piece slides off and reveals a thick purple cardboard jewelry-style box.
The purple package has no writing or pictures, and would be ideal if you are intending to present this as a gift to someone. The top lid lifts open and reveals the toy itself and a detailed user manual in several languages. The remaining pieces are stored in a pull-out drawer underneath, and include a 1-year warranty card, the USB charging cord and a USB to AC adapter, as well as a plush velvety gray toy pouch. The entire set-up is super classy and rivals other leading luxury brands.
And this is where I had my bubble burst. Unfortunately, the packaging proved to be the best part of this toy for me. It had the potential to be truly amazing, but seemed to fall short on several points…. but I’ll get to all that.
Liberte is rechargeable, and an initial charge of about 2 hours prior to play was needed for my initial charge. On this it will run for up to 6 hours ,with a stand-by time of 90 days; I haven’t had to recharge mine yet, despite several 20-30 minutes sessions with it. It is supposed to glow red from the LED interface when the battery is low. During charging the interface will blink, and then stop to indicate a full charge. While this is a nice feature, I would much rather one that won’t overcharge. With this you have to keep an eye on this and be sure never to charge for more than 24 hours or risk ruining your battery. And I’m forgetful.
Made of smooth, shiny, black ABS plastic that glides easily over the skin, this toy is built for safety and comfort. While plastic may not be the best choice for sharing unless a condom is used, it is hypo-allergenic, phthalates-free and body-safe.
The design of this toy is sleek and functional. It actually reminds me quite a bit of an elongated Lelo Nea. The entire toy is 4” long, and only ¾ of an inch diameter near the clit stimulator, and has a bulbous 1” diameter base that is easy to hold and contours to the pubic curve. In laymen’s terms… it is really like a finger extending to give pin-point stimulation to the clit.
So where this should be a great toy, it really fails in performance. First off, I hate that the controls are located on the bottom of the base of the toy. Yes, the part that is against your pubic bone during use. So if you want to change speeds or patterns you have to stop and lift it up to do so.
Second fail concerning the controls? It took me about 3 minutes to shut it off the first time, and I continue to struggle every time. It should be simple. It has only an (+) increase/advance through patterns control, and a (-) decrease/reverse though patterns button that double as the on and off to power the unit. It supposedly works the way every other vibe works; just hold the decrease down for 2 seconds and it should shut-off… only it doesn’t. And I have no idea why.
To be fair, there is one redeeming feature. The controls can be locked for transport by pressing both the up and down buttons at the same time and holding for 5 seconds. The interface will then go dark to indicate it is locked. To unlock, you just repeat the procedure until the interface comes back on.
But the biggest fail of this toy is the complete lack of power. Not only are the vibrations surfacy and buzzy, they travel up the “shaft” and buzzed the crap out of my hand when I tried to use it. It’s also louder than I expected, and sounds almost as though something is rattling against the plastic and is somewhat distracting in play.
Liberte is compatible with all lube types, even silicone. Clean-up is easy with toy cleaner or warm water and soap, just be sure not to get water up into the control panel. To increase the life of Liberte’s battery, try not to let the battery die completely and recharge after every couple uses, or 6 weeks of stand-by time. Keep stored in the pouch that is included.
Thank you Edenfantasys for sending me the Extase Liberte to review, available now for only $64.49!
